Amber Heard and Johnny Depp finalize their divorce

On Jan. 13, a California judge finalized actor Johnny Depp’s and actress Amber Heard’s divorce. As part of the divorce agreement, Depp was ordered to pay Heard $7 million, all of which Heard has pledged to two charities.

Depp and Heard met on the set of a movie in 2011 and tied the knot in early 2015. They were married for less than two years. Many of the key terms of their divorce agreement were hashed out in August 2016. The settlement was announced one day before a restraining order hearing was scheduled to occur. The hearing would have involved Heard’s allegations that Depp was physically abusive.

In addition to the monetary agreement, Heard will also keep the couple’s two dogs and a horse. Other assets will also be split, though neither party will receive spousal support. Both individuals also signed a confidentiality provision that prevents them from discussing their relationship on social media or in interviews.

When a former couple is going through a high asset divorce, it can be very difficult to come to an agreement. If mediation does not work, a family law attorney may assist with providing a valuation of any real estate, investments and other marital property so that it can be divided up between the two parties. If the person wants a particular asset, such as the family home, a piece of property or a vehicle, the attorney may attempt to negotiate with the other person’s legal team. If no agreement can be made at all, the attorney may argue for specific assets in front of the judge.
